Premier League Preview
Weekend Premier League Insight
Friday 13th January 2012
After the traditionally festive 3rd round of the FA Cup it’s back to the Premier League as the title contenders look to strengthen their grip and those struggling seek to start a bit of a run that should see them safe come the ‘crunch’.
It’s ten years now since Manchester United lost three on the spin in the league, but after a meek defeat to Blackburn and a drubbing away at St James’ Park Alex Ferguson is staring down the barrel of repeating this unwelcome record. Mercifully for the Red Devils they face what should prove a straightforward task as they host Bolton at Old Trafford. Bolton badly need three points to try to haul themselves out of the bottom three, but it would take a brave man to bet against a United victory here.
Aston Villa host Everton, who will be hoping to have Darren Gibson make a first appearance, in a fixture where one might expect a home win. Everton’s form at Villa Park is strong however, and we’d fancy a score draw here with the spoils shared. Fulham make the trip up to Ewood Park in a fixture their away form to date would surely suggest they won’t fancy. They’ve been hopeless on the road this season and a victory for Blackburn should see them climb off the foot of the table.
Chelsea Vs Sunderland at Stamford Bridge would, in recent years, have been the home banker of all home bankers. It’s but a couple of years however since Sunderland nicked a shock result here, and they have been playing well of late under Martin O’Neill. They’ve been getting late goals which are always valuable, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see both teams score in this fixture with a late goal settling matters. Liverpool host Stoke off the back of their cup victory over Manchester City. Steven Gerrard is back, and if they can start converting a greater percentage of their efforts on goal they will surely prove too strong for the visitors.
Swansea have acquitted themselves well in the Premiership thus far and might be able to hold Arsenal to a draw on their visit this weekend. In Monday night’s fixture Manchester City visit Wigan with a renewed focus on a first Premier League title. Wigan have been showing better form of late, but we’d be surprised if City are anything but rampant here, and will be taking to City to win by two clear goals or more.
